THE LODGE
Luxury Lodge Designed For Northern Lights Gazing
Otava Lodge sits atop Ollerovaara Hill — a location chosen for its open northern horizon, its elevation above the valley, and the uninterrupted access to deep Arctic wilderness it provides. Fifteen minutes from Rovaniemi airport; far enough that the sky above you at night is genuinely dark.
Your dedicated guide monitors aurora conditions and cloud cover across the wider region throughout the evening. When conditions are at their best — from the Aurora Lounge’s panoramic windows or out in the forest where the sky opens fully — your group moves immediately. Just you. No co-ordination required.
Aurora Lounge — Your Indoor Front Row
Panoramic north-facing windows, designed to watch the sky without stepping outside. Warm, intimate, entirely private.
Private Northern Lights Excursions
When the lights are best seen from the wilderness, your guide takes you there — snowmobile, snowshoe or open sleigh, deep into the forest away from any light.
Zero Light Pollution
Hilltop location on Ollerovaara, 15 minutes from Rovaniemi. Far enough for dark skies. Close enough for airport transfers in minutes.
Real-Time Aurora Monitoring
Your guide tracks KP-index and cloud cover across the region all evening. When it’s time to go — you go. No alarm clocks, no missed moments.

A TRUE STORY
What It Means When We Say We Go Above and Beyond
ONE WINTER. ONE FAMILY. ONE GUIDE WHO DROVE 340 KM.
340 Kilometres. One Family. One Dream.
Last winter, one of our guests had just one wish: to see the Northern Lights. But during their stay, the skies above the lodge were snow-filled almost every evening — visibility nearly impossible. With one night remaining, we knew something had to be done.
”Our guide drove over 340 kilometres — from Otava Lodge to Kiruna, Sweden — to find clear skies. Several hours later, under an open Arctic sky, the family witnessed a truly spectacular Northern Lights show.”
He drove them home before dawn. That is not an exceptional story for us — it is the standard we set for ourselves. When you stay at Otava Lodge, your experience is something we take personally.
340 kilometres driven one way, to find clear skies
Your guide at Otava Lodge is an expert in the Arctic, a reader of weather and sky — and someone who takes your experience as a personal matter. This is how we work.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Everything You Need to Know About a Luxury Northern Lights Tour in Rovaniemi
-
When is the best time to visit Lapland to see the Northern Lights?
The best time to visit Lapland for the Northern Lights is between September and mid-April. October, February and March usually offer the best balance of darkness, aurora activity and outdoor temperatures. Most guests find that five to seven nights provides the best likelihood of clear skies and active auroras.
-
Can the Northern Lights be seen during Christmas or New Year?
Yes, the Northern Lights can be seen during both Christmas and New Year in Lapland. The aurora season runs continuously from autumn through to spring. December and January typically have the darkest skies and longest nights of the season, offering maximum viewing hours each evening. These weeks are among our most popular, so we recommend reaching out well in advance if you are considering this period.
-
What happens if the weather closes in during our stay?
Cloud cover is part of the Arctic, and your guide continuously monitors conditions across a wide area. If clearer skies are within reach, we will take you there by vehicle, snowmobile or whatever is needed. For example, one of our guides once drove 340 kilometres to Kiruna, Sweden in a single evening to find open skies for a family determined to see the auroras. That level of personal commitment defines our standards.
-
What causes the Northern Lights?
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are caused by activity on the surface of the sun. Charged particles from the sun collide with Earth’s atmosphere, creating the beautiful curtains and waves of light in the sky. The phenomenon occurs year-round, but it can only be seen when the sky is dark, which is why the Arctic winter offers the best conditions.
-
Is the lodge suitable for larger groups or family gatherings?
Yes, Otava Lodge is ideal for larger groups and families travelling together. It is a perfect luxury destination for private gatherings, celebrations or multi-generational stays. Activities, mealtimes and the daily rhythm are all tailored to the group’s individual wishes and preferences, including children of any age and their specific needs.
-
What’s included in the stay?
Otava Lodge is always reserved exclusively for one party at a time, ensuring complete privacy and a truly personalised experience, and each stay is fully all-inclusive.
Guests enjoy full board meals tailored to their preferences and prepared by a private chef, including selected beverages. The stay includes host service, a private guide with a Mercedes-Benz minivan, all transportation, daily housekeeping, sauna and two outdoor jacuzzis.
Winter clothing and activities of the guests’ choice are also included, such as guided Northern Lights excursions, husky sledding, snowmobiling, and Santa Claus and reindeer visits, along with many other experiences.
-
How does the process work – is there a set programme or package?
There is no set programme. Every stay is individually tailored, beginning with a conversation about your dates, your group and your wishes. We then prepare a tailor-made proposal, which can be further refined to not only meet your expectations, but exceed them. Every detail of the stay is meticulously planned and thoughtfully taken care of, including dietary requirements, activities and logistics, so you can simply relax and enjoy your stay with those who matter most.
-
Can our stay be kept completely private?
Yes. We do not share guest names, publish references or mention any stay without explicit permission. Your visit is entirely private, without exception.
